Live Online Workshop Series
Anti-Racism Training

Dr. Alana Tappin, C. Psych

Inequality makes us unwell. Research that has investigated inequality and social outcomes in “developed” nations demonstrates that the frequency of mental health problems are highest in nations with the greatest inequality. In almost all health professions across Canada and the United States, social injustice is considered to have an impact “out there.” What if social inequality is in fact embedded in the way we learn to care for and support our clients in our own field? The purpose of this training is to begin critically addressing our own blindspots as clinicians and leaders in our profession. As we begin to increase and deepen our awareness, we will see with increasing clarity the myriad of ways social inequality affects an individual and family. These new insights will enable us to better understand our clients and deliver more effective and efficient clinical services.

The training will be divided into four 4-hour sessions, held one time per month, for a total of 16 hours of training.

Each session will be 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on March 12, April 16, May 14, and June 11.

Session 1 (March 12)

Session 2 (April 16)

Session 3 (May 14)

Session 4 (June 11)

The training will be provided via Zoom and will rely on active engagement and discussion about some sensitive and difficult topics. A maximum of 50 participants will be able to register. Participants must sign up for the entire series of workshops, as each session will build upon knowledge gained in the previous session. Participants will also be required to attend a 1-hour “lifework/accountability group” in between sessions, where 3-4 participants will meet to discuss themes and topics arising from the training.
